If we move more, we feel better and with the right diet too, we can look better.<\/p><p>It\u2019s no different in pregnancy. Our body is subjected to massive changes, both physically and mentally, and exercise can help us to adapt better. Not only will it help to manage weight gain, an inevitable part of pregnancy, but we\u2019ll have the energy to fight back at those raging hormones, which can send some of us a little loopy \u00a0\u2013 again hard to avoid during those nine wonderful months!<\/p><p>What\u2019s more,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bradleypricemd.com\/documents\/exercise_in_pregnancy.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">studies have found<\/a>\u00a0that following the right programme of exercise during pregnancy will lead to a happier state of mind, more (or better) sleep, and even an easier labour. Sign me up now!<\/p><p><strong>Proper precautions<\/strong><\/p><p>Exercise during pregnancy\u00a0is not dangerous if you take the proper precautions but there are some sports you should avoid. We asked our expert gynaecologist, Dr Peter Chew to explain.<\/p><p>\u201cThe dangers that may arise are the types of exercise\u00a0that are likely to result in \u00a0injuries to the mother and the baby, says Dr Chew, who runs the Peter Chew Clinic For Women at Gleneagles Medical Centre.<\/p><p>\u201cFor example, contact sports such as football, basketball or kick boxing carry a high risk of getting knocked in the stomach,\u201d he says. \u201cThis can cause placental separation resulting \u00a0in vaginal bleeding and occasional\u00a0 foetal death. In particular, you should also consider the stage of your pregnancy and if you are experiencing a smooth or high risk pregnancy.<\/p><p>\u201cA safe schedule would be about 2-3 times a week with each session lasting about\u00a030 minutes in the first and second trimesters, suggests Dr Chew. \u201cFor the last trimester, you may reduce your activities slightly depending on your state of body. But, do not exercise till the point of exhaustion.\u201d<\/p><p>For all women, you need to be more aware of your body and its limitations during pregnancy. Listen to your body during exercise and always stop if you feel like you are exerting yourself. You may not get the same level of sweat but yoga will concentrate on improving core strength and muscle tone.<\/p><p>Swap cycling outdoors for a brisk walk. You can still enjoy the cool breeze and lush greenery of your route without the danger of falling. Plus, you can take hubby along for the ride!<\/p><p>Swap horse riding for squats. Pregnancy safe squats will help you to strengthen your legs and glutes, the main muscles worked when horse riding.<\/p><p>Swap skiing for swimming. You won\u2019t get snow but swimming is a relaxing and independent sport that leaves you feeling weightless.
